  • Description

THE AEROTRAIN - A HOVERCRAFT THAT'S GUIDED BY A SINGLE RAIL - OR THE HALF-SIZE VERSION OF IT, ANYWAY, HAD ITS FIRST TEST TODAY (FRIDAY) NEAR PARIS.

THE AEROTRAIN WAS TESTED ON FOUR MILES (6.5 KMS) OF CONCRETE TRACK IN THE SHAPE OF THE LETTER "T" BETWEEN LIMOURS AND GOMETZ.

THE HALF-SIZE VERSION CAN REACH A SPEED OF ABOUT 170 MILES AN HOUR (285 KMS). IT'S PROPELLED BY AN AIRCRAFT ENGINE MOUNTED ON TOP AND A ROCKET.

ITS DESIGNERS SAY IT'S MUCH SAFER THAN CONVENTIONAL TRAINS AND HOVERCRAFT. THEY SAY IT CANNOT COME OFF THE TRACK, THAT IT IS MORE COMFORTABLE AND SILENT, AND THAT IT GIVES THE IMPRESSION OF FLYING.

WHEN IT IS PASSING THROUGH BUILT-UP AREAS OR MOVING IN AND OUT OF TERMINALS, THE "PILOT" CAN CUT THE AIRCRAFT ENGINE, LOWER RUBBER WHEELS AND "DRIVE" ALONG THE TRACK.

THE FULL-SIZE AEROTRAIN IS EXPECTED TO REACH A SPEED OF 240 MILES AN HOUR (400 KMS).
