Background: In Turkey, thousands of extra police have been drafted into the capital, Ankara, after an upsurge in political violence. 1,700 lives have already been claimed by the violence this year and the killing on 3rd September of at least 29 people has added to the country's political crisis. The parliamentary opposition is maintaining its attempts to weaken the right-wing minority government of Prime Minister Demirel.

SYNOPSIS: The workers' district of Mamak near Ankara is infamous for its violence. Last week, arsonists burnt down 10 houses in the area. The rising rate of political violence threatens to spread throughout the capital. It has fed on soaring prices and an unstable government. Parliament is deadlocked by a near-even split between a pro-Western government and an opposition alliance of left-wingers and Islamic fundamentalists. Over one hundred ballots have not yet produced a new president, and important bills are left undebated. The lower house now meets every day but only to discuss a series of opposition censure motions.

Working class families bear the brunt of Turkey's instability. The International Monetary Fund has recommended a rest???ct???re taxation bill, but it remains unpassed by parliament along with proposals to deal with the political violence.

A leftist guerrilla attack in broad daylight near the headquarters of the right-wing Association of Agriculture Engineers, brought home to many residents of the capital the scale of the almost-daily violence. It also brought the presence of heavily-armed troops, already a common sight in the 20 Turkish provinces under martial law.
