Background: A cruiser, a destroyer and a military tanker from the soviet Union arrived at the capital of Senegal, Dakar, on Tuesday (19 November) for a five-day official goodwill visit.

The group, based in the Atlantic, has just competed a series of exercises off he South African Cape of Good Hope.

Although Soviet warships are now regular visitors to West African ports, the Helicopter Carrier (cruiser) -- one of two now in service with Russian Fleet -- did not come into the harbour.

The destroyer sailed into the inner harbour alone to begin the goodwill visit to Senegal. Her crews marched through the streets of Dakar.

And later, officers from the destroyer, led by their ambassador to Senegal. Mr Georgi Ter-Gazaryants, laid a wreath on a war memorial.
