    THREE SENIOR OFFICIALS OF THE CONGOLESE MINING COMPANY GEOCOMIN HAVE BEEN SENTENCED TO JAIL TERMS RANGING FROM TWO TO NINE YEARS FOR MISAPPROPRIATION OF FUNDS. THEY WERE BOARD CHAIRMAN JEAN BAPTISE KIBWE, SENTENCED TO NINE YEARS JAIL, VICE-CHAIRMAN EMMANUEL KINI, FIVE YEARS, AND ADMINISTRATOR RODOLPHE YAVA, WHO WAS GIVEN A TWO-YEAR TERM.

    GEOCOMIN (SOCIETE GENERALE CONGOLAISE DES MINERALS) EARLY LAST YEAR TOOK OVER THE BELGIAN-CONTROLLED UNION MINIERE DU HAUT KATANGA, WHOSE ESTIMATED ASSETS OF 40,000 MILLION BELGIAN FRANCS (ABOUT GBP 333 MILLION STERLING) WERE EXPROPRIATED BY THE CONGO.

    THE COURT ORDERED SEIZURE OF THE CONVICTED MEN'S GOODS AND REFUND OF THE MISAPPROPRIATED FUNDS. MR. KIBWE WAS ORDERED TO PAY DAMAGES OF 10,000 ZIARES (ABOUT GBP8,333 STERLING), M.KINI, 2,000 ZAIRES (ABOUT GBP833 STERLING).

    THEIR LAWYERS SAID THEY WOULD APPEAL.

    MR. KIBWE WAS VICE-PRESIDENT AND FINANCE MINISTER IN THE KATANGA REGIME OF MOISE TSHOMBE DURING THE KATANGA SECESSION THAT BEGAN IN 1960 AND ENDED IN 1963 AFTER UNITED NATIONS INTERVENTION.
