TRANSCRIPT: SEQ 12: REFUGEE: "COMING OVER ON THE BOAT IT WAS PRETTY GOOD, BUT COMING DOWN FROM ENUGU TO PORT HARCOURT WE WERE STOPPED ABOUT THIRTY-FIVE TIMES BY THE CIVIL DEFENCE LADIES INCIDENTALLY, THEY WERE WORSE THAN THE MEN -- YOU KNOW THEY WANTED A LITTLE BIT OF AUTHORITY. THEY WERE OPENING OUR CASES AND TAKING OUR SHOES OFF, AND ASKING ALL SILLY QUESTIONS, MORE OR LESS."

INTERVIEWER: "HOW LONG DID THE JOURNEY TAKE YOU, PLEASE?"

REFUGEE: WE MET OUT AT SIX O'CLOCK AND ARRIVED IN PORT HARCOURT AT HALF PAST TWELVE - SIX AND A HALF HOURS.

INTERVIEWER: ??? JOURNEY OF ABOUT A HUNDRED AND TWENTY MILES."

REFUGEE: ??? IT' IS ABOUT A HUNDRED AND NINETY. WE NORMALLY GET AROUND ABOUT THREE AND THREE QUARTER HOURS."

INTERVIEWER: "AND THE JOURNEY ON THE BOAT ITSELF?"

REFUGEE: "WELL, IT'S NOT BEEN BAD AT ALL. IT WAS VERY NICE AND COOL LAST NIGHT, SO WE ALL GOT DOWN TO SLEEP, MORE OR LESS."

INTERVIEWER: "YOU SLEPT ON DECK LAST NIGHT?"

REFUGEE: "YES, MOST OF US DID -- BUT THERE WERE A LOT DOWN THE HOLD AS WELL."

Background: THE FIRST CONTINGENT OF REFUGEES FROM THE NIGERIAN BREAKAWAY REGION OF BIAFRA ARRIVED IN LAGOS ON THURSDAY AFTER A SHORT SEA VOYAGE FROM PORT HARCOURT. NEARLY SIX HUNDRED REFUGEES-- BRITONS, AMERICANS, DUTCH SWISS, ISRAELIS, GERMANS, ITALIANS, JAPANESE -- LEFT ITALIAN LINER 'ISONZO' UNDER STRICT SECURITY WATCH.

STRICT SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS HAD BEEN LAID ON FOR THEIR ARRIVAL. ON DISEMBARKING, ALL THE EVACUEES WERE SCREENED TO ENSURE THAT NO MERCENARIES OR SABOTEURS HAD BEEN ABLE TO SLIP OUT OF THE SECESSIONIST EASTERN REGION.

THE INTERNATIONAL RESCUE MISSION WAS MOUNTED AFTER SWIFT DIPLOMATIC MOVES IN LAGOS BROUGHT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S PERMISSION. IT IS ALSO BELIEVED THAT THE EVACUATION WAS CARRIED OUT WITH THE APPROVAL OF THE BIAFRAN LEADER, LIEUTENANT-COLONEL ODUMEGWU OJUKWU.

LATEST REPORTS FROM THE NIGERIAN FRONTS INDICATE THAT FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TROOPS STILL CONTROL THE UNIVERSITY TOWN OF NSUKKA, AND ARE CONTINUING THEIR STEADY MARCH TOWARDS THE BIAFRAN CAPITAL, ENUGU. THE BULLETIN SAID THAT REBEL FORCES HAD ABANDONED OGOJA PROVINCE, AND THAT OCCASIONAL AMBUSHES AND SKIRMISHES BY RETREATING BIAFRANS WERE BEING PROMPTLY WIPED OUT.

IN ALL ABOUT 3,000 FOREIGNERS ARE STILL IN THE EAST, WHICH SECEDED EIGHT WEEKS AGO AND PROCLAIMED ITSELF AN INDEPENDENT REPUBLIC.
