Background: Hundreds of demonstrators -- led by Members of Parliament from the ruling Congress Party and the Indian Communist Party -- demonstrated outside the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi on Sunday (4 May).

They were protesting at Chinese statements on the question of Sikkim, whose people recently voted to join India. China accused India of illegal annexation of the Himalayan Kingdom.

The demonstrators said this was interference in India's internal affairs.

The demonstrators were stopped several hundred yards (metres)from the Embassy where they listened to speeches by their leaders, who then pasted a copy of a memorandum to the Embassy gates.

Sikkim forms a strategic buffer between India and Chinese-ruled Tibet.
