  • Description

THE NEW GHANA GOVERNMENT, THE GHANAIAN NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL, TODAY (FRIDAY) ACCUSED GUINEA OF "HARBOURING ONE OF THE MOST NOTORIOUS TYRANTS AND CRIMINALS IN AFRICA, KWAME NKRUMAH, WHO NOW STYLES HIMSELF CHIEF OF STATE OF GUINEA AND LEADER OF THE GUINEA DEMOCRATIC PARTY." IT ALSO ANNOUNCED THE IMMEDIATE CLOSURE OF GHANA'S EMBASSY IN CONAKRY AND CALLED ON THE GUINEAN GOVERNMENT TO ALLOW THE AMBASSADOR AND STAFF TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY. YESTERDAY GHANA BRIEFLY LAID ASIDE THE CARES OF RECONSTRUCTION AS WORKERS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY STAGED MASSIVE DEMONSTRATIONS TO MARK THE FIRST WEEK OF THE NEW REGIME.

WORKERS IN ACCRA ROSE EARLY FOR THE BIG PROCESSION FROM THE HALL OF TRADE UNIONS THROUGH THE CAPITAL'S PRINCIPAL STREETS. THEY CARRIED PLACARDS CELEBRATING THE END OF NKRUMAH'S RULE AND DENOUNCING THE FORMER PRESIDENT AS A TRAITOR. SOME CARRIED DEFACED PORTRAITS OF DR. NKRUMAH. AS OFFICE WORKERS WATCHED THE DEMONSTRATION ACCRA'S FAMOUS MARKET MAMMIES JOINED IN WITH A NOISY DEMONSTRATION OF THEIR OWN.

IF THERE IS MUCH PRO-NKRUMAH FEELING IN ACCRA THERE IS LITTLE SIGN OF IT. BUT THE NEW REGIME IS FACING GROWING HOSTILITY FROM A GROUP OF AFRICAN STATES. THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, MALI AND TANZANIA HAVE JOINED GUINEA IN SUPPORTING THE FORMER PRESIDENT.

HOWEVER, THREE AFRICAN STATES OF THE FRENCH-SPEAKING GROUP OF FIVE - NIGER, TOGO AND THE IVORY COAST - HAVE NOW RECOGNISED THE NEW REGIME. AND BRITAIN'S ANNOUNCEMENT OF RECOGNITION TODAY, BROUGHT TO 13 THE NUMBER OF COUNTRIES THAT HAVE DECLARED RECOGNITION.
