Background: More than seven million Belgians go to the polls on Sunday (November 7) to choose their national government for the next four years.
The elections were prompted by a political crisis last month when the ruling Social Christians of Prime Minister Gaston Eyskens were accused by the Walloon Socialists of not intending to fulfil their promises contained in far-reaching constitutional reforms rushed through Parliament last summer.
After a series of counter-exchanges the Prime Minister asked King Baudouin to dissolve Parliament and given notice of the election.
The election campaign has been extremely calm mainly because Eyskens' Government has managed to largely damp down the flemish-Walloon language dispute which has led to the downfall of many of Belgium's 18 post-war governments.
