  • Description

The Belgian Antarctic Expedition is on its way to the Antarctic at last : 25 days of sailing will be needed to reach the Cape, where they will stay 2 or 3 days to take in fresh food and fuel.

The Expedition will leave the Cape around Dec. 10th. If everything goes well, they will reach the great Antarctic Ice Continent 15 days later.

It is to be emphasized that nobody ever debarked in this part of the Antarctic. But, the trip from the Cape to the Antarctic may as well take 1 month.

Nevertheless it is estimated that the expedition will reach its destination at the utmost around New Year. Then 2 weeks will be needed to unload the material. Around the end of January the 2 ships will start on their return trip, leaving the expedition to its terrible Winter season.

Only the "Polarhav" will come back in January 1959 for the 17 members of the expedition and their scientific material, the cars, the helicopter and the plane. The rest of the material will be left behind as there can be no question of taking apart the entire base.
