  • Description

NIGERIA'S NATIONAL SOCCER TEAM, THE "GREEN EAGLES"' HELD GHANA'S "BLACK STARS" TO A 2-2 DRAW IN A STORMY INTERNATIONAL SOCCER MATCH AT THE LAGOS CITY STADIUM ON SATURDAY (JANUARY 28).

GHANA WERE IN THE LEAD BY TWO GOALS TO ONE AT HALF TIME. IT WAS A GAME IN WHICH TEMPERS ROSE AND DECISIONS OF THE DAHOMIAN REFEREE WERE QUESTIONED AT CERTAIN STAGES OF PLAY.

THE PENALTY AWARD, WHICH LED TO GHANA'S SECOND GOAL, WAS STRONGLY CONTESTED BY THE NIGERIAN PLAYERS, AND THE MATCH WAS HELD UP FOR ABOUT THREE MINUTES BEFORE NIGERIAN OFFICIALS INTERVENED.

BOTH GHANA'S GOALS CAME FROM THE PENALTY SPOT -- AND BOTH WERE SCORED BY THEIR CAPTAIN, ADDO ODAMETTEY.

NIGERIA OPENED THE SCORING WITH A WELL-TIMED SHOT BY INSIDE FORWARD LARENCE OMECHACHIC, BUT GHANA HAD THE BEST OF THE PLAY IN THE OPENING HALF.

AFTER THE INTERVAL, NIGERIA BEGAN TO EXERT PRESSURE AND LAUNCHED SEVERAL THREATENING ATTACKS. IT WAS ONE SUCH ATTACK WHICH EVENTUALLY BROUGHT THEIR EQUALISING GOAL. OMECHACHIE WAS AGAIN THE SCORER.

THE MATCH WAS THE FIRST LEG OF THE ANNUAL AZIKIWE GOLD CUP COMPETITION BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. THE RETURN MATCH IS SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE IN ACCRA ON FEBRUARY 12.
