  • Description

A CROWD OF MORE THAN A THOUSAND ATTENDED A PROTEST AT MIRI, SARAWAK, ON NOVEMBER 12, TO PROTEST AGAINST A PROPOSED BILL PUBLISHED BY THE GOVERNMENT AIMED AT RESTRICTING RESIDENCE IN CERTAIN AREAS OF THE COLONY.

THE BILL, CLAIMS THE UNITED PEOPLE'S PARTY WHICH ORGANISED THE PROTEST, HAS "CAUSED THE DEATH OF DEMOCRACY IN SARAWAK". THE POINT WAS STRESSED BY A COFFIN DRAPED IN BLACK WITH THE WORD DEMOCRACY WRITTEN UPON IT, WHICH WAS LATER BURNED.

THE UNITED PEOPLE'S PARTY, WHICH HAS SOME COMMUNIST SUPPORTERS, IS SAID TO HAVE AN UNDERGROUND MOVEMENT WHICH IS WORKING AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT. IT WAS TO CURB THIS MOVEMENT THAT THE BILL HAS BEEN PROPOSED. THE PARTY WITH A STRENGTH OF 30,000, MOSTLY CHINESE FARMERS AND SHOP KEEPERS, SAYS THE BILL HAS "KILLED THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF FREEDOM AND LIBERTY".
