  • Description

There was a demonstration of new vehicles and road safety devices at Crowthorne in southern Britain on Monday (3 June) to coincide with the London opening of the Fifth International Technical Conference on Experimental Safety Vehicles.

Among the devices on show on Monday was the new Dunlop Denovo tyre. It allows motorists to drive on even after a puncture.

There was also a demonstration of an anti-skid device for motorbikes.

Injury to pedestrians makes up a high proportion of accidents in Britain, and so the British Leyland car manufacturing company have developed a 'Pedestrian Catcher' -- by which, on impact, a pedestrian is knocked up on to the bonnet and held there safely.

The British Road Research Laboratory presented a new advance in the field of public transport. This was a bus that can be driven without a driver on major roads. The auto-driver' which follows a magnetic strip on the road is claimed to be safer, cheaper and more reliable than a human driver.
