Indonesia's Foreign Minister Dr. Subandrio recently visited cities in West Java, Indonesia, to meet some of the Chinese traders who formerly carried on their businesses in rural areas but have been forced to move by Government decree.
It is estimated there are 2 1/2 million Chinese in Indonesia, many of them successful in business and trade. The Government stated that it was taking against alien traders in order to protect the country's economy. The new decree was put into effect first of all in West Java, which served as a testing area.
As a result of the Government's action, relations between Indonesia and Communist China have deteriorated. The Indonesian Government has accused Chinese Embassy officials of hindering the evacuation of Chinese from rural areas under the new regulations, and from Peking have come protests against alleged atrocities committed against Indonesia's rural Chinese.
Some of the Chinese have asked to be repatriated to mainland China and are being housed in special quarters awaiting their repatriation.
