  • Description

Thousands of refugees from troubled Angola continue to pour across the border into South West Africa (also known as Namibia) straining facilities and resources in their bid to find somewhere to settle.

Officials in the south African administrated territory estimated that between five and six thousand refugees have entered the area in the past month, and thousands more are attempting to leave the former Portuguese colony.

At Grootfontein, where refugees are being housed before travelling on to Pretoria, a tent village has begun to sprawl around the old German army camp, and conditions are primitive. Bulldozers have levelled surrounding land to allow more tent to be erected.

The South African government was planning to airlift refugees to Portugal. Many have only a few possessions and the clothes they were when they fled Angola. A great number have left behind homes, jobs and money.
