Background: West germany beat Spain by two goals to one in a friendly soccer match in Stuttgart on Saturday (November 24th). West Germany is assured of a place in next year's World Cup Finals - it is the host nation - but Spain does not yet have a clear lead over Yugoslavia European Group Seven.

Jupp Heynckes scored twice for West Germany in the first half. He has now scored five goals in 24 international appearances. West Germany's leading goal-scorer Gerd Mueller also looked dangerous. But in the second half Spain tightened up their defence, and scored a goal through their captain Jose Claramunt.

West Germany made several substitutions but that did not succeed in lifting them above the disappointing form they showed in a recent friendly match against Scotland, another World Cup qualifier. They remain, however, one of the hottest favourites to win the Cup.
