Background: THE LAST CONTINGENT OF BRITISH SOLDIERS LEFT ADEN YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) AS SOUTH ARABIA BECAME THE INDEPENDENT PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF SOUTH YEMEN. THE PRE-ARRANGED CEASEFIRE WAS SCRUPULOUSLY OBSERVED AND NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT MILITIAMEN WORKED SIDE BY SIDE WITH REGULARS OF THE SOUTH ARABIAN ARMY CONTROLLING CROWDS AS CELEBRATIONS BEGAN.

THERE WAS NO CEREMONY TO MARK THE END OF 128 YEARS OF BRITISH RULE. THE LAST EIGHT MEN, OF 42 ROYAL MARINES COMMANDO, WERE LIFTED BY HELICOPTER FROM THE 12TH HOLE OF THE KHORMAKSAR GOLF COURSE. THE HONOUR OF BEING THE LAST MAN TO LEAVE FELL TO LIEUTENANT-COLONEL TIMOTHY "DAI" MORGAN, A WELSHMAN, THE COMMANDER OF 42 COMMANDO UNIT.

CELEBRATIONS STARTED YESTERDAY MORNING THROUGHOUT SOUTH ARABIA AS THE FINAL STAGES OF THE BRITISH WITHDRAWAL GOT UNDER WAY. THE LARGEST DEMONSTRATION WAS IN FORMER TROUBLE SPOT SHEIK OTHMAN, WHERE THOUSANDS WAVED THE RED, WHITE AND BLACK COLOURS OF THE N.L.F. - THE TERRITORY'S NEW RULERS. TWO HOURS AFTER THE LAST HELICOPTER HAD LEFT THE GOLF CURSE, THE N.L.F. LEADERS RETURNED FROM THEIR TALKS WITH THE BRITISH AT GENEVA AND WERE ACCORDED A TREMENDOUS RECEPTION.

DURING THE ADEN EMERGENCY, WHICH BEGAN ON DECEMBER 10 1963, BRITISH TROOPS LOST 57 KILLED AND 669 WOUNDED. A FURTHER 76 BRITISH SOLDIERS WERE KILLED AND 235 WOUNDED IN FIGHTING ELSEWHERE IN SOUTH ARABIA.
