  • Description

Egypt's President Sadat returned to a hero's welcome at Cairo airport on Tuesday (13 April) after his five-nation tour of Europe.

Heading the welcoming party at the airport were Egypt's Vice-President, Hosny Mubarak and Prime Minister, Mamdouh Muhammad Salem.

The President's tour took in West Germany, France, Italy, Yugoslavia, and Austria and concentrated on securing more military, economic and political support for Egypt.

During his three-day visit to West Germany, President Sadat reached agreement on aid to Egypt of 47 million pounds sterling (90 million U.S. dollars). However, West Germany refused to be a guarantor for any Middle East settlement or for German troops to be part of a peacekeeping force.

During his tour, the President also received a commitment from France to assist in building Egypt's arms industries. France will supply 40 Mirage F-1 fighter bombers, 100 Alpha jet trainers and ground support planes.

The European agreements came one month after Egypt renounced its friendship and co-operation treaty with the Soviet Union.

Thousands of Egyptians lined the route from Cairo airport to President Sadat's home. Cairo newspapers hailed the European visit as successful beyond all expectations.
