  • Description

ON TUESDAY, TURKEY CELEBRATED THE 41ST ANNIVERSARY OF THE LIBERATION ON ISTANBUL AFTER A 5-YEAR OCCUPATION BY THE "ALLIES" OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR - BRITAIN, FRANCE AND ITALY. IN ISTANBUL, A MILITARY PARADE TO MARK THE EVENT WAS WATCHED BY THE GOVERNOR AND THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES.

A WREATH WAS LAID ON THE MEMORIAL TO THOSE WHO FELL IN THE DEFENCE OF TURKEY IN THE WAR. THEN TROOPS MARCHED PAST, THEIR REGIMENTAL BANNERS FLYING IN THE WIND. AMONG THE COLOURFUL ITEMS IN THE PARADE WAS A DISPLAY BY SOLDIERS DRESSED AS JANISSERIES - THE DREADED SHOCK TROOPS OF THE TURKISH ARMY IN THE DAYS OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE. IN TRADITIONAL COSTUME THEY PERFORMED THE WARLIKE DANCES WHICH WERE A PRELUDE TO BATTLE.

THROUGHOUT TURKEY, AT VARIOUS PROVINCIAL CENTRES, SIMILAR PARADES WERE HELD. THERE, TOO, CONTINGENTS OF TROOPS MARCHED PAST MAYORS OR PROVINCIAL GOVERNORS, FOLLOWED BY UNITS OF TANKS AND ARTILLERY. IN SOME PLACES, A POSITION OF HONOUR WENT TO THE VETERANS OF THE 1914-18 WAR.
