Background: The world's new light heavyweight boxing champion, Miguel Angel Cuello of Argentina, returned home triumphant to Buenos Aires on Tuesday (23 May) after defeating Jesse Burnett of the United States on a ninth round knockout in Monte Carlo. It was an unexpected fight for the Argentinian - for his opponent wasn't meant to be in the contest at all.

SYNOPSIS: The jubilant Cuello was given a warm and enthusiastic welcome, and thousands turned out to wave to him as he was driven to the Argentine Boxing federation office. The title became vacant only last week after Britain's John Conteh was stripped of the championship for refusing to meet Cuello. Burnett was called in as a late substitute.

Cuello celebrated until almost dawn after his win, but his face showed what a punishing battle he had been in - with a huge, yellowing bruise over he is right eye and a swelling under his left eye. Cuello has now extended his unbeaten record to 21 fights, with all but two inside the full distance. He used his notable left-hook to greet effect - but only after soaking up plenty of punishment.

Argentina now has both the world Boxing Council and the rival World Boxing Association's light heavyweight titles. The WBC has ordered Cuello to defend the title against Yugoslavian Mate Parlov within 90 days , and the promoters may match the winner against Burnett. The American arrived in Monte Carlo less than 48 hours before the fight after an arduous journey from Los Angeles. It's felt he may have won if he had had time for a proper build-up.
