  • Description

Customs officers in Ethiopia have confiscated tusks and skins worth about 50-thousand sterling (about 100 thousand dollars). The contraband was poached y hunters and was on its way to Djibouti for illegal export. In all the officers took 162 elephant tusks and many leopard and cheetah skins.

Members of the Wildlife Conservation Department said the tusks averaged two metres (yards) in length making them bigger than those usually found in Ethiopia. They suspect the tusks were poached outside the country and shipped through to Djibouti. The tusks and skins were being transported by camel when they were seized.

Wildlife officials in east Africa have expressed concern at the growing amount of poaching and have called on Governments to take stronger action against the poachers.
