Background: A FILM PREVIEW OF LONDON'S LATEST TOWER; THE GBP8 MILLION, 31-STOREY HILTON HOTEL IN PARK LANE..THE BIGGEST HOTEL BUILT IN EUROPE SINCE THE WAR, IT'LL BE OFFICIALLY OPENED NEXT WEDNESDAY BY MR.MAUDLING, BRITAIN'S CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER.
THE ACCENT EVERYWHERE IS ON COSMOPOLITAN ELEGANCE AND COMFORT.THE PUBLIC ROOMS ARE GROUPED AROUND THE LARGE, LUXURIOUS LOBBY, WITH ITS MARBLE FLOOR AND STRING OF SMART SHOES.INTERNATIONAL THOUGH THE HILTON IS, TWO OF ITS PUBLIC ROOMS PAY TRIBUTE TO THE LOCAL SCENE.THE LONDON TAVERN AND THE ST.GEORGE'S BAR BOTH TOOK THEIR INSPIRATION FROM THE TRADITIONAL ENGLISH INN.
THERE IS A BALLROOM FOR 1,000 PEOPLE AND IT WILL ALSO BE USED FOR BANQUETS.PRINCIPAL FEATURE OF THE ROOM IS TEN CHANDELIERS, EACH A GROUP OF GREEN GLASS GLUES OF DIFFERENT SIZES, MADE IN HOLLAND.THE BALLROOM IS APPROACHED BY AN ESCALATOR FROM THE GROUND FLOOR.
THE INTERNATIONAL RESTAURANT IS THE HOTEL'S PRINCIPAL RESTAURANT AND OCCUPIES POSITION OVERLOOKING HYDE PARK ABOVE THE MAIN ENTRANCE.EXTENDING THROUGH TWO FLOOR HEIGHTS (SECOND AND THIRD), ITS DECOR HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO FIT IN WITH THE PLAN THAT THE ENTIRE CHARACTER OF THE RESTAURANT CAN BE CHANGED TO PRESENT CUISINE FROM FIVE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD.
THE INTERNATION BAR BOASTS A MIDNIGHT BLUE CEILING, SOFT LIGHTING AND A COMPLETED CARPETED FLOOR.AMONG THE FEATURES OF INTEREST IS A SERIES OF 25 PANELS REPRESENTING THE NATIONAL FLOWERS OF COUNTRIES WHERE THE HILTON HOTELS GROUP OPERATES.
THE HILTON CAN ACCOMMODATE 856 GUESTS IN 512 ROOMS WHICH ARE LOCATED ON TWENTY-THREE FLOORS, THE CHOICE IS WIDE, RANGING FROM SINGLE STUDIO ROOMS TO LARGE DE LUXE SUITES WITH DINING ROOMS AND KITCHENS.
EVERY ROOM HAS A PRIVATE BATHROOM WITH WALLS LINED IN MARBLE, RADIO AND TELEVISION SETS AND DIALLING TELEPHONE.MOST BATHROOM TAPS PRODUCE AMERICAN-STYLE ICED WATER IN ADDITION TO THE USUAL HOT AND COLD.THE INTERIORS ARE MODERN, RESTFUL AND ATTRACTIVE WITH EXTRA-LONG BEDS AND EFFICIENT LIGHTING.
EVERY GUEST FLOOR GIVES FINE VIEWS OF LONDON, BUT THE MOST ASTONISHING PANORAMA - IT GIVES A 30-MILE VIEW - IS PROVIDED BY THE UNIQUE ROOF RESTAURANT AT THE VERY TOP.DESIGNED BY SIR HUGH CASSON, IT'S INTENDED TO BE USED FOR LUNCHES AND IN THE EVENINGS.A VIEWING TERRACE RUNS ROUND THE ROOM.
THE LONDON HILTON IS THE FORTY-NINTH HOTEL IN THE WORLD-WIDE HILTON ORGANISATION.NEXT WEEK THE 480-ROOM ATHENS HILTON OPENS, AND IN JUNE NEW HOTELS FOR ROME AND ROTTERDAM WILL BRING THE TOTAL OF HILTON HOTELS INTERNATIONAL OPERATING IN EUROPE TO EIGHT.
SITUATED ON A 1 1/4 ACRES (5,400 SQ.METERS) SITE FRONTING ON TO PARK LANE, AND BORDERED BY PITTS HEAD NEWS, HERTFORD STREET, AND STANHOPE ROW, THE LONDON HILTON'S "Y"-SHAPED TOWER RISES 328 FEET (100 METRES) ABOVE PARK LANE.
PLANS FOR THE HOTEL BEGAN AS LONG AGO AS 1955 WITH SKETCHES IN THE NOTEBOOK OF ARCHITECT SIDNEY KAYE OF LEWIS, SOLOMON, KAYE & PARTNERS, LONDON.THE BASIC AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED IN MARCH 1960 BETWEEN CONRAD N.HILTON, PRESIDENT OF HILTON HOTELS INTERNATIONAL, AND CHARLES CLORE FOR NEW CITY PROPERTIES LTD.UNDER THIS THE HOTEL WOULD BE OPERATED BY HILTON HOTELS INTERNATIONAL ON A RENEWABLE 25-YEAR LEASE.
CONSTRUCTION BEGAN IN SEPTEMBER, 1960, AND AT ONE TIME THERE WERE AS MANY AS 850 MEN OF FORTY TRADES WORKING ON THE SITE, INSTRUCTIONS ISSUED BY THE ARCHITECTS RAN TO 3,000 PAGES OF DIMENSIONS AND 350 PAGES OF SCHEDULES.SPECIAL BUILDING TECHNIQUES WERE EVOLVED TO SPEED WORK ON THE CONGESTED SITE.
