    THE STRIKE INVOLVED ALL THE 13 PRIVATELY OWNED AND GOVERNMENT OPERATED RAILWAY SYSTEMS.

    THE STRIKE WAS CALLED AFTER ALL-NIGHT NEGOTIATIONS BROKE DOWN. THE RAIL UNIONS WERE SEEKING A RISE OF 8-THOUSAND YEN (ABOUT GBP8 STERLING). THEY REJECTED AN OFFER OF 2,100 YEN (ABOUT GBP2 STERLING).

    PRIVATE RAILWAYS WERE HALTED FOR 24 HOURS. THE GOVERNMENT SYSTEMS WERE CLOSED DURING THE MORNING RUSH HOUR, BETWEEN 0400 AND 0900.

    AN ESTIMATE 19-MILLION PEOPLE WERE AFFECTED BY THE STRIKE.

    IN TOKYO CROWDS OF UP TO 30-THOUSAND PEOPLE QUEUED OUTSIDE SHINJUKU STATION FOR BUSES.

    THE RAIL UNIONS HAVE THREATENED TO HOLD ANOTHER STRIKE AT THE END OF THIS MONTH UNLESS THEIR DEMANDS FOR INCREASED PAY ARE MET.
