THE MEETING WAS ARRANGED BY THE MILITARY ADMINISTRATOR FOR LAGOS, MAJOR MOBOLAJI JOHNSON, FOLLOWING A PROTEST BY THE YOUNGER GENERATION TOT HE NEW MILITARY GOVERNMENT FOR NOT BEING INCLUDED IN THE ORIGINAL MEETING OF THE ELDERS OF LAGOS.

    WHEN THE CONFERENCE OPENED ON THURSDAY (25 AUGUST), MR. LATEEF JAKANDE, A LAGOS JOURNALIST, WAS ELECTED CHAIRMAN. FOUR COMMITTEES WERE SET UP TO WORK OUT DETAILS OF VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THE FUTURE OF LAGOS. MAJOR JOHNSON OUTLINED THE ISSUES BEFORE THE CONFERENCE AND SAID HE WOULD LEAVE THE DELEGATES TO MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS.

    THURSDAY'S CONFERENCE WAS PART OF THE SERIES OF MEETINGS NOW GOING ON IN THE COUNTRY TO DECIDE WHAT FORM OF FUTURE ASSOCIATION IS BEST FOR NIGERIA.
