  • Description

A NEW LIGHTHOUSE IS BEING BUILT BY THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT FOR THE BENEFIT OF INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING LINES. THE LIGHTHOUSE IS LOCATED IN THE STRAITS OF MALACCA 16 MILES FROM PORT SWETTENHAM, CENTRAL WEST MALAYA. IT IS RIGHT IN BETWEEN MALAYA AND INDONESIAN SUMATRA.

FATHOM BANK - THE OLD LIGHTHOUSE, BUILT IN 1902, WILL NOT BE PULLED DOWN. IT IS TO BE USED BY MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS FOR FISHING PURPOSES.

AN AUSTRALIA ENGINEERING FIRM IS BUILDING THE NEW LIGHTHOUSE. CONSTRUCTION WORK STARTED LAST FEBRUARY AND IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED WITHIN FOUR TO FIVE MONTHS. THE AUSTRALIAN ENGINEERS ARE WORKING WITH THEIR MALAYSIAN COUNTERPARTS.

BARGES ARE USED FOR TRANSPORTING BUILDING EQUIPMENT TO THE LIGHTHOUSE. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, INDONESIA GUNBOATS GAME CLOSE TO THE LIGHTHOUSE TO TAKE STILL PHOTOGRAPHS. THEY, HOWEVER, DID NOT HARM THE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS.

THE COST OF THE NEW LIGHTHOUSE IS ABOUT 83,000 POUNDS STERLING.

SOME ONE HUNDRED OCEAN-GOING AND CARGO SHIPS CALL AT PORT SWETTENHAM OR PASS THROUGH THE STRAITS OF MALACCA; HENCE A PROPER LIGHTHOUSE TO GUIDE THEM IS NECESSARY.
