  • Description

English skipper Ray Illingworth joined fores with John Snow to check his team's rapid downhill slide in batting against Australia in the second day of the fourth cricket test match at Headingly of Friday (July 28).

Australian spin-bowler Ashley Mallett had taken full advantage of the slow, turning pitch to claim five English wickets before lunch when Illingworth and Snow made their stand.

With a combination of stolid defence and cautious run-scoring they drew England out of a dangerous-looking 128 for 7 to clock up a joint 104 until Snow was stumped by Marsh with a ball from Invararity.

At close of play England were 252 for 9 with Illingworth on 54 and England had a fairly premising lead of 106 over Australia, who were all out on the first day for a disappointingly low 145 runs.
