The usual thrills and spills as nearly 70 drivers fought to claim one of the 33 grid place in this year's Indianapolis Grand Prix to held May 30. For four days big stars and beginners sped round the course of America's premier 500-mile car race, pushing their vehicles to extremes to qualify.

First three grid places were taken by Eddie Sachs, average speed for four laps 146.592: Jim Rathmann. 146.371: Rodger Ward, 145.560. Surprise of the trials was novice Jim Hurtubise's track scorching 149.601 third run. In his two-tone purple Travelon Trailer he whipped 70,000 track fans into a frenzy as he swept round the course on his last but one ride.

This year's field is the fastest ever. Average speed on the trials was 144.070 mph - against record figure of 1959, 143.445.

Two disasters of the trials - Paul Russo's supercharger in his Novi exploded, and novice driver Cotton Farmer's Bardol Special spun off the track. Luckily this year's trials ended without serious injury or death.
