Khmer Government forces recaptured part of the besieged city of Kompong Cham on Tuesday (11 September). The Government forces moved into the southern sector of the city -- the third largest in the Khmer Republic.
Many insurgent troops occupying the city were killed din bitter house-to-house fighting. Two Government forces were attempting to link up and clear the city completely. The battle for Kompong Cham has been raging for three weeks, but the Government troops now control all major public buildings.
And while the insurgents concentrate their forces on Komphong Cham, Government forces have been tightening their grip on other major towns, and attempting to open two main supply roads to Phnom Penh. The two routes are Highway Four, tot eh republic's only deep-water port, Kompong Som; and Highway Five, to the main rice-growing areas of the West. However, the insurgents managed to withstand the Government operations.
On Monday (10 September) one of the tough tattles was on Highway Four about 22 miles (30 kms) from the capital, where Government troops faced three battalions of Communist-led insurgents.
