    MITSURU KONO EMERGED AS THE STRONG MAN IN THE JAPANESE TEAM. THE 22 YEAR OLD SENSHU UNIVERSITY STUDENT WON THREE GAMES TO GIVE JAPAN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

    HE WAS THE ONLY MAN TO BEAT THE BRILLIANT DEFENSIVE BARRIER PUT UP BY WEST GERMAN CHAMPION EBERHARD SCHOELER. FOR 210 NERVE WRACKING MINUTES HE BATTLED AGAINST SCHOELER UNTIL HIS DEFENCE FOUNDERED.

    IT IS THE SEVENTH TIME SINCE 1954 THAT JAPAN HAVE WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP. THE SOVIET UNION WON THE CORBILLON CUP FOR THE WOMEN TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP. WHILE THE RUSSIANS LOST TO THE CZECHS IN THE MEN'S SINGLES.
