  • Description

Soviet swimmer Leonid Ilitchev last night (Saturday) set a men's European 200-metres freestyle record of one minute 57.8 seconds.

Ilitchev, one of Russia's leading swimming stars, was competing in a two-day meeting in Paris in which French, Dutch and Soviet swimmers took part.

His remarkable performance in the men's 200-metres freestyle event clipped four-tenths of a second off the mark set by Hans Joachim Klein (West Germany) in Tokyo in 1963.
