  • Description

The leader of the left-wing group Fretilin (Revolutionary front for an Independent East Timor) denied on Friday (29 August) that his movement was Communist.

Secretary General Jose Ramos Horta said in an interview that Fretilin, which now controls East Timor's capital Dili and most of the island, is a revolutionary front fighting for independence.

He denied charges that Fretilin troops had been killing civilians. He blamed instead the rival right-wing movement the UDT, (Timor Democratic Union) for killing women and children.
