    An explosion in a San Pablo chemical factory in California on Thursday (5 April) caused an estimated one million dollars (GBP416,660) damage. The explosion woke up residents of the San Francisco Bay area. It was heard as far away as 50 miles (50 kms). Many thought an earthquake had hit the area.

    Flames shot hundreds of feet into the air. It was first feared that a nearby oil refinery had exploded. Large drums containing chemicals were hurled hundreds of yards by the explosion. About eight houses were reported damaged but there were no serious injuries among the residents.

    Witnesses said a series of explosions followed a small one in the plant, Workmen escaped and no serious injuries were reported.

    The cause of the explosion is not known. The fire that followed took several hours to contain.
