President Makarios of Cyprus made a brief first visit to the Lebanon on Tuesday (November 10). President Suleiman Franjieh and Prime Minister Saeb Salam met him in Beirut, and the three leaders held a brief session of talks.
Archbishop Makarios made his stopover visit to Beirut on his way back from a five-day official visit to Japan.
At the airport, he told newsmen that since no specific problems exists between Lebanon and Cyprus, his discussions with the Lebanese leaders would range over a variety of general topics, including the Middle East situation.
The Archbishop added that his visit to the United Nations for the 25th anniversary session had given him hope of a Middle East settlement. Cyprus, he said, was ready to play an active role to help bring such a settlement about.
