  • Description

Competitors and officials from nearly 40 of the teams who will compete in the 1970 Commonwealth Games, gathered in Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Gardens on Wednesday (July 15) for a garden party. On the day before the Games' official opening, they were the official guests of the Secretary of State for Scotland, Mr. Gordon Campbell.

The English girls' swimming team was absent from the party, as they are protesting against the overly long and "old-fashioned" length of their skirts. England's Assistant General Manager, Christopher Davidge has turned down demands for shorter skirts, on the grounds that all the women representing England--whose ages vary between 12 and 50--must wear the same thing.

Bitterly cold winds have been blowing through Edinburgh for the past week, and many of the athletes, unused to the change in climate, have come down with coughs and colds.

1.960 athletes from 42 countries are expected to compete in this year's Games, although the teams from St. Vincent, St. Lucia, and Malta have not yet arrived.
