East Germany, the Olympic champions, showed no mercy in their World Cup qualifier on Saturday (29 October) when they pounded Malta into a nine-nil defeat in Babelsberg. And the crushing humiliation could well mean the end of the tiny Malta's participation in international soccer.
SYNOPSIS: Malta got off to a bad start even before they left home, according to reports in Valetta. In their last international they went down nine-nil....and the reports said that they had been told they had to do better this time.
But East Germany went straight into the attack...and scored their first goal.
There was worse to come, though. The East Germans went straight back into the attack, and had scooped up another two goals by half-time.
When goal number three came, not long before the whistle for half-time, the Maltese team, who are all amateurs, must have seen their future in international soccer vanishing.
But there was worse to come with the second half. No sooner had they taken the field again than East Germany was back pounding Malta's ailing defence.
Malta's hopes of staying in world soccer crumbled as goal number six came from a penalty ... and there were still three more goals to come.
