  • Description

    US President Johnson and
west German Chancellor Ludwig Erhard were up early today (29 December) for a
busy Sunday winding up their two-day conference at the Chief Executives LBJ's
    Ranch in Texas.

Mr. Johnson said the talks so far had been "most successful." A joint communique
was expected shortly before Erhard leaves for Bonn tonight.

Mr. Erhard arrived Friday (28 December) at Bergstrom Air Force Base, near the
Texas capital city, Austin, on his chartered Lufthansa jet. He received a warm
greeting from Mr. Johnson and reviewed an honor guard of troops. Then the
Chancellor and the President walked to an Air Force helicopter for the 65-mile
    trip to the Johnson ranch.

There--on the front porch under a picture of Erhard with the word "Welcome" in
German--Chancellor Erhard chatted with the President and Mr. Johnson. Mrs.

Johnson had prepared for his arrival by digging out of the family files an old
    recipe for German chocolate cake.

Today (29 December) the two leaders flew by helicopter from the ranch to
Fredericksburg, a nearby community which was settled in 1846 by Germans and is a
center of German-American culture. Mr. Erhard spoke in German to a crowd of one
    thousand.

President Joh son said he was stimulated by his talks with the Chancellor and he
added both men felt they "could look ahead with optimism to an era when all
nations could live together peacably as neighbors."
