  • Description

RELATIONS BETWEEN THE NEIGHBOURING NORTH AFRICAN STATES OF TUNISIA AND ALGERIA HAVE REACHED BREAKING POINT IN THE PAST TWENTY FOUR HOURS. TONIGHT (SATURDAY) TUNISIA'S AMBASSADOR TO ALGERIA, M. AHMED MESTIRI, ARRIVED BACK IN TUNIS BY AIR FOLLOWING A RECALL BY HIS GOVERNMENT.

PRESIDENT HABIB BOURGUIBA OF TUNISIA ANNOUNCED THE RECALL OF THE AMBASSADOR AT A RALLY IN TUNIS YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) WHICH WAS ATTENDED MORE THAN 100,000 PEOPLE. THE RALLY WAS HELD TO MARK THE ELEVENTH ANNIVERSARY OF TUNISIA'S INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT.

LARGE CROWDS CHEERED AS PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA, ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE, DROVE THROUGH THE STREETS OF THE CAPITAL BEFORE THE RALLY.

LATER IN A SPEECH HE CHARGED THE ALGERIAN GOVERNMENT, LED BY PREMIER AHMED BEN BELLA, OF AIDING A PLOT AGAINST HIS LIFE ON DECEMBER 24. THE PRESIDENT SAID THAT IN FUTURE TUNISIA'S FRONTIERS WITH ALGERIA WOULD BE "SEVERELY CONTROLLED".

BUT ALTHOUGH HE ANNOUNCED THE RECALL OF THE AMBASSADOR TO ALGERIA, PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA MADE NO MENTION OF A FORMAL COMPLETE BREAK IN DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS. HE SAID THAT HIS COUNTRY WOULD BE READY TO "RESUME OUR RELATIONS, BUT MUTUAL RESPECT AND SINCERITY SHOULD BE ESTABLISHED."
(THIRTEEN OF THOSE CHARGED IN A PLOT OF TRYING TO KILL PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA WERE SENTENCED TO DEATH ON THURSDAY.)
