TRANSCRIPT: "Just as the search was about to be moved to another area the gunman was spotted.

"Hiding in a three storey mansion less than thirty metres from where I was standing with camera crew Richard Cole and Jim Crystal.

"There was little time to react, policemen were already diving for cover, we followed suit as the gunman opened fire.

"When the firing stopped the police warned us not to move, we only had a car between us and the gunman. The camera still rolling, and held overhead, the siege house came into view. It's high on a hill a perfect vantage point, from here the gunman kept us pinned down for three hours.

"In the second hour the gunman opened up with everything he had. Screaming at police to 'go to hell', that he 'wanted to die'. He even threatened to take us all with him, claiming to have ten sticks of gelignite in his possession.

"The screams of obscenity continued, along with volleys of rifle fire. He went on a rampage of destruction, tossing furniture through windows and ignoring police appeals to give himself up.

"The siege was two and a half hours old when teargas was brought in. There was one final warning from the police megaphone and when they went ignored the teargas was fired, while crack marksmen from the police special operations teams edged their way towards the house.

"Five minutes passed and still no noise from within. Then a volley of shots was heard as police stormed through the entrance. Detective Sergeant Bill Bull confronted the gunman in a gas filled room and was shot in the lower abdomen. Police returned the fire wounding the gunman in the throat. He died within minutes. Paramedics raced to the scene. They gave emergency treatment to Sergeant Bull before moving him to an awaiting ambulance."
