  • Description

HUNDREDS OF SPECTATORS WATCHED THE FIRST TESTING OF THE SLUICE GATES ON THE GREAT KARIBA DAM WHICH SPANS THE ZAMBEZI RIVER JOINING NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN RHODESIA, ON SEPT 13. AS EACH GATE WAS TESTED IN TURN HUNDREDS OF TONS OF WATER CRASHED INTO THE RIVER.

NO REASON HAS BEEN GIVEN FOR THE TESTS BUT IT IS THOUGHT THAT THE FEDERAL POWER BOARD WISH TO RELIEVE THE PRESSURE ON THE 400-FT DAM WALL CAUSED BY THE 175-MILE-MADE LAKE. AT A PRESS CONFERENCE IN SALISBURY, AUG 2, THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD ANNOUNCED THAT THE WALL WAS THREATENED BY A WEAKNESS IN THE ROCKBED.

AS THE SLUICE GATES WERE TESTED WORK WAS STARTED ON THE WEDGE BEING BUILT AT THE BASE OF THE DAM WALL INTO THE ROCKFACE, ON THE SOUTHERN RHODESIA SIDE TO GIVE IT STRENGTH. THOUSANDS OF TONS OF CONCRETE AND ROCK WILL BE POURED INTO IT SO THAT THE WALL CAN TAKE THE FULL STRAIN WHEN THE WATER REACHES THE PEAK LEVEL IN ABOUT TWO YEARS TIME.

IT WILL BE 14-MONTHS BEFORE WORK ON THE WEDGE IS COMPLETED. THE COST OF THE NEW CONSTRUCTION WORK HAS NOT YET BEEN ANNOUNCED. THE POWER BOARD HAS STATED THAT THERE WAS NO DANGER TO THE DAM WALL AT PRESENT.
