    The first group of Pakistan Moslem pilgrims for the year have left Karachi for the journey to Mecca.

    More than 1,500 pilgrims were farewelled on Thursday (21 September) by the Minister of Information, Maulana Kausar Niazi.

    They went aboard the vessel Safina-e-Arab in Karachi Harbour after being farewelled by thousands of friends and relatives on the dockside.

    The pilgrimage to Mecca, or haj, as it is called, is an important and obligatory part of the life of every Moslem. When completed, it enables the pilgrim to add Haji to his name.

    The haj is considered to provide a unique occasion for strengthening international unity among Moslems.

    The Information Minister told the pilgrims the Government had increased its allocation of money for hajis this year in line with President Bhutto's wishes that as many as possible should have the opportunity of performing the pilgrimage.

    He stressed that it was the duty of every Pakistani pilgrim to act as an ambassador for his country had help build the image of Pakistan.

    SYNOPSIS: On a dockside in Karachi Harbour, the first group of Pakistan pilgrims for the year prepares to leave for Mecca. More than one thousand five hundred were in this group, seen here boarding the ship that will take them on he voyage that plays an important part in their Moslem religious life. Thousands of friends and relatives were at the dockside to say farewell.

    At the dockside to farewell the pilgrims was the Minister of Information, Maulana Kausar Niazi. He told them it was the duty of every one to act as an ambassad??? for his country, and they should do all in their power to build up the image of Pakistan. The Government had provided additional money this year to allow more pilgrims, who otherwise could not afford the haj, to make the journey. This was in line with the wishes of the country' President Bhutto. The haj is considers??? to provide a unique opportunity for strengthening international unity among Moslems.
