    Floods in the West Bengal area have claimed at least 100 lives. The worst disaster was the drowning of more than 80 people when a boat capsized in the flood swollen River Ganges. Elsewhere, more than 20 people have died in the northwest state of Rajasthan and tens of thousands of homes washed away. An official estimated that one million people could have been affected by the floods.

    SYNOPSIS: An estimated one million people have been affected by floodwaters from the River Ganges and its tributaries in West Bengal. The death toll has risen past the hundred mark....mainly due to the deaths of more than 80 people when a boat capsized after being struck by a sudden squall.

    Crops, cattle and property worth 100 million rupees (5.5 million steering) has been destroyed in the floods, which have also affected districts where refugees form East Pakistan had sought sanctuary.

    An area of almost 9,000 square kilometres (about 2,300 square miles) has been inundated in Bihar state where this film was shot. The rivers have begun to recede in some areas, but the Ganges is still above the danger level near the state capital of Patna.

    Relief supplies are being sent ??? the devastated areas and the Government has made cash grants farmers who have lost their livelihood. Local officials have been despatched to New Delhi to plead the Bihar State's case for more relief.
