  • Description

JAPANESE AIRCRAFT, DESTROYERS AND A SUBMARINE ROCKETED, BOMBED AND TORPEDOED THE BLAZING 43,722 TON TANKER, YUYU MARU, ON THURSDAY (28 NOVEMBER) AS THE VESSEL LAY 300 MILES (482 KMS) OFF CAPE INUBO, EAST OF TOKYO.

THE BIG LIQUIFIED-GAS CARRIER HAD BEEN ON FIRE SINCE A COLLISION WITH A FREIGHTER IN TOKYO BAR EARLY IN NOVEMBER. THIRTY-THREE SEAMEN DIED IN THE BLAZE, WHICH ENGULFED BOTH SHIPS.

THE TANKER'S CARGO OF PETROLEUM GAS AND NAPTHA KEPT THE BLAZE ALIVE. THE CONTINUAL DANGER OF A MASSIVE EXPLOSION MADE THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT DECIDE TO HAVE THE TANKER TOWED AWAY FROM TOKYO BAY AND SUNK.

FOR MORE THAN 20 HOURS DESTROYERS FROM THE MARITIME SELF-DEFENCE AGENCY -- THE OFFICIAL NAME FOR THE JAPANESE NAVY -- FIRED AT THE TANKER. AIRFORCE JETS WERE SENT IN TO BOMB THE VESSEL. BUT STILL IT REFUSED TO SINK, DESPITE AN INCLINATION OF ONLY FIVE DEGREES.

FINALLY THE SUBMARINE, NARUSHIO, WAS CALLED IN TO HELP. TWO TORPEDOES HIT THE TANKER AMIDSHIPS WITH LITTLE APPARENT EFFECT. IT TOOK ANOTHER TWO LATER TO PERSLADETHE YUYU MARU TO SINK GRACELESSLY BELOW THE WAVES.

THE WHOLE OPERATION COST THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT AN ESTIMATED 80 MILLION YEN (GBP 114,000 POUND STERLING) AND CAUSED A LOT OF RED FACES AMONG THE JAPANESE NAVY.
