  • Description

MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN SAID IN LONDON TONIGHT (MONDAY) THAT BRITAIN'S "FEND-FOR-YOURSELF" ATTITUDE TOWARDS COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES HAD LED TO A FEELING OF EMPTINESS AND INSECURITY. THE MALAYSIAN LEADER WAS SPEAKING AT A BANQUET GIVEN BY THE LORD MAYOR OF LONDON. SIR CHARLES TRINDER, AT THE GUILDHALL. THE BANQUET WAS IN HONOUR OF THE PRIME MINISTERS AND PRESIDENT ATTENDING THE COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE.

SIR CHARLES TRINDER OPENED THE BANQUET WITH A SPEECH IN WHICH HE SAID THAT HE HOPED ONE RESULT OF THE CONFERENCE WOULD BE A RE-INVIGORATION OF THE COMMONWEALTH.

REPLYING TO THE LORD MAYOR'S TOAST, THE MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER SAID IT HAD BEEN HOPED THAT BRITAIN WOULD PROVIDE LEADERSHIP FOR THE COMMONWEALTH. UNFORTUNATELY, HE WENT ON TO SAY, INSTEAD OF CARRYING ON HER PROTECTIVE ROLE, BRITAIN IS WITHDRAWING FROM HER COMMITMENTS TO HER COMMONWEALTH FRIENDS.

IN ADDITION TO THE COMMONWEALTH LEADERS, THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY ATTENDED THE BANQUET AS DID THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION, MR. EDWARD HEATH.

TOMORROW, THE COMMONWEALTH LEADERS ARE EXPECTED TO DEAL AGAIN WITH ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL TROUBLES AFFECTING THEIR COUNTRIES. THE DISPUTE OVER IMMIGRATION IS AGAIN EXPECTED TO BE DISCUSSED BEFORE THE CONFERENCE FINISHES ON WEDNESDAY (15 JANUARY).
