    DELEGATES TO THE LAMBETH BISHOPS' CONFERENCE BROKE OFF THEIR TALKS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) TO SEE A STAGE PLAY IN LONDON WHICH DEALT WITH THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH.

    THE SHOW THEY SAW WAS A SPECIAL MATINEE PERFORMANCE OF "HADRIAN THE SEVENTH," A PLAY ABOUT A ROMAN CATHOLIC LAYMAN'S DREAM OF BECOMING POPE. THERE WERE ABOUT 490 ASSORTED ARCHBISHOPS, BISHOPS, WIVES AND OBSERVERS FROM OTHER DENOMINATIONS IN THE AUDIENCE.

    THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY, DR. MICHAEL RAMSEY, AND THE ARCHBISHOP OF YORK, DR. FREDERICK COGGAN, WERE AMONG THE AUDIENCE. THEY MET THE CAST AFTERWARDS AND DR. RAMSEY PRONOUNCED THE PERFORMANCE "A VERY INTERESTING PLAY". THE BISHOP OF SOUTHWARK, DR. STOCKWOOD, HAD ALREADY SEEN THE PLAY ONCE BEFORE, BUT HE SAID HE ENJOYED IT JUST AS MUCH.

    ALEC McGOWAN PLAYS THE PEOPLE'S POPE, WHO EATS PICKLED ONIONS AND GIVEN AWAY THE VATICAN TREASURE. "HADRIAN THE SEVENTH" WAS WRITTEN BY PETER LUKE.
