  • Description

NATIONAL GUARDSMEN USED TEAR GAS FOR THE SECOND TIME IN FOUR DAYS TO BREAK UP A CROWD OF ROCK-THROWING CIVIL RIGHTS DEMONSTRATORS IN THE RACIALLY-TENS CITY OF CAMBRIDGE, MARYLAND, ON THURSDAY NIGHT (14 MAY).

THE TROUBLE BEGAN WHEN ABOUT 100 NEGROES ATTEMPTED TO MARCH ON THE WHITE SECTION OF THE ATLANTIC COAST FISHING COMMUNITY, WHICH WAS ALREADY UNDER LIMITED MARTIAL LAW FOLLOWING A LONG PERIOD OF RACIAL DEMONSTRATIONS AND VIOLENCE.

THE MARCHERS CAME FACE TO FACE WITH THE NATIONAL GUARDSMEN, AND THERE WAS A BRIEF CONFERENCE WITH THE GUARD COMMANDER, GENERAL GELSTON, WHO URGED THEM TO DISPERSE. ALTHOUGH THE GREAT MAJORITY OBEYED HIS ORDER, 25 REFUSED AND BEGAN THROWING STONES. THE GUARDSMEN DONNED GAS MASKS AND FIRED TEAR GAS SHELLS INTO THE CROWD FORCING THEM TO DISPERSE.

(LAST MONDAY NIGHT -- 11TH MAY -- A SIMILAR INCIDENT OCCURRED, DURING WHICH FIVE GUARDSMEN WERE SLIGHTLY INJURED AND TWO DEMONSTRATORS WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL.
