    MEMBERS OF 56 TRADE UNIONS IN SINGAPORE, MET AT THE NATIONAL THEATRE TODAY (SATURDAY), TO PROTEST AGAINST THE IMPORT QUOTAS PLACED BY BRITAIN ON TEXTILES MANUFACTURED IN SINGAPORE.

    ALTHOUGH NO RETALIATORY ACTION WAS TAKEN AT THE MEETING, MEMBERS VOTED TO SENT A PROTEST NOTE TO THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, MR. HAROLD WILSON. THEY ALSO DECIDED TO EXERT PRESSURE ON THE MALAYSIAN CENTRAL GOVERNMENT TO ADOPT STIFFER ATTITUDE TO BRITISH RESTRICTIONS.

    THE MEETING WAS CALLED BY THE SINGAPORE TRADES UNION CONGRESS. BOTH ITS PRESIDENT AND SECRETARY-GENERAL WERE PRESENT. THEY ARE MR. HO SEE BENG AND MR. DEVAN NAIR RESPECTIVELY.

    MEANWHILE TALKS ON THE COTTON GOODS DISPUTE BETWEEN MALAYSIA AND BRITAIN WILL BE RE-OPENED IN KUALA LUMPUR EARLY NEXT WEEK. THE TALKS REACHED DEADLOCKS IN OCTOBER LAST YEAR.

    A TOP-LEVEL BRITISH DELEGATION IS DUE IN KUALA LUMPUR SHORTLY TO TAKE PORT IN THE TALKS.

    THE TALKS WERE THE RESULT OF A BAN ON THE IMPORT OF CERTAIN BRITISH GOODS INTO SINGAPORE IN RETALIATION AGAINST RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED BY BRITAIN ON TEXTILE GOODS FROM THE ISLAND.
