    FIVE ASIAN FOREIGN MINISTERS HAVE BEEN MEETING IN BANGKOK TO DISCUSS FURTHER ECONOMIC AND DEFENCE CO-OPERATION IN THE AREA.

    THE FIVE -- THAILAND, INDONESIA, MALAYSIA, SINGAPORE AND THE PHILIPPINES -- YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) PLEDGED JOINT CO-OPERATION TO MAINTAIN SECURITY IN SOUTH EAST ASIA AND AGREED THAT FOREIGN MILITARY BASES WERE A TEMPORARY EXPEDIENT.

    THEY ALSO SIGNED A SEVEN POINT DECLARATION ESTABLISHING A NEW REGIONAL CO-OPERATION GROUPING, THE ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH-EAST ASIAN NATIONS (ASEAN).

    THE DECLARATION SAID THAT THE COUNTRIES WOULD CO-OPERATE TO ACCELERATE ECONOMIC GROWTH, SOCIAL PROGRESS AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT. THE MEMBERS WERE DETERMINED TO ENSURE STABILITY AND SECURITY FROM EXTERNAL INTERFERENCE. TOURIST, COMMUNICATIONS AND TRADE QUESTIONS WOULD BE REFERRED TO A STANDING COMMITTEE TO BE SET UP IN DJAKARTA.
