  • Description

AS ANTI-BRITISH VIOLENCE CONTINUED TO RAGE THROUGH THE COLONY OF ADEN TODAY (SUNDAY) A BRITISH COUPLE AND THEIR SON WERE INJURED BY A GRENADE BLAST. YESTERDAY, CROWDS PROTESTING AGAINST BRITISH RULE RAN RIOT, BURNING CARS AND SMASHING SHOP WINDOWS, AND NEARLY 700 PEOPLE ARE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY.

ABOUT 500 BRITISH TROOPS AND 120 MEN FROM THE ADEN FEDERATION REGULAR ARMY AND FEDERAL NATIONAL GUARDS WERE RUSHED TO THE CRATER DISTRICT OF ADEN YESTERDAY TO PUT DOWN THE RIOTS AND ENFORCE A STRICT CURFEW. SOME 14 CARS WERE BURNT AND 59 DAMAGED IN THE RIOTING.

THE RIOTERS, WHO ALSO SET FIRE TO A CHURCH AND ATTACKED A NEWSPAPER OFFICE, WERE PROTESTING AGAINST THE BRITISH SUSPENSION OF ADEN'S CONSTITUTION AND THE ASSUMPTION OF DIRECT RULE BY THE HIGH COMMISSIONER, SIR RICHARD TURNBULL. TODAY, HUNDREDS OF ARRESTED RIOTERS SQUATTED IN THE HOT SUN IN THREE BARBED-WIRE ENCLOSURES NEAR POLICE HEADQUARTERS.

THE RIOTING CAME AT THE SAME TIME AS A 24-HOUR GENERAL STRIKE, CALLED BY THE ADEN TRADES UNION CONGRESS. THE BRITISH TROOPS, WHO WERE CALLED IN WHEN THE POLICE FAILED TO CONTROL THE RIOT, CONTINUED TO PATROL THE CRATER AREA TODAY TO ENFORCE THE CURFEW.
