    PRESIDENT FERDINAND MARCOS OF THE PHILIPPINES AND HIS WIFE LED 2,000 VETERANS OF THE PACIFIC WAR AND RELATIVES OF THE DEAD ON A "SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY" ON SATURDAY TO BATAAN ISLAND -- ONE OF THE PHILIPPINES ISLANDS AND THE SCENE OF ONE OF THE FIERCEST BATTLES OF THE WAR. THE PRESIDENT, HIMSELF A WAR HERO, LED A REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY ON THE ISLAND, RECALLING THE DAY 25 YEARS AGO WHEN THOUSANDS OF FILIPINOS AND THEIR AMERICAN ALLIES DIED IN THE BATTLE WITH THE JAPANESE.

    BATAAN ISLAND IS SITUATED IN THE LUZON STRAIT. THE FILIPINO GUERILLAS AND UNITED STATES TROOPS WERE KILLED IN A LAST-DITCH STAND AGAINST THE JAPANESE INVADERS, AND DIED ALSO IN A LONG MARCH LATER AS PRISONERS OF WAR. THE DEAD WERE BURIED ON THE ISLAND, AND MANY OF THOSE WHO TOOK PART IN SATURDAY'S PILGRIMAGE WERE RELATIVES OF THE DEAD. A NUMBER OF AMERICANS ALSO TOOK PART.
