  • Description

A 73-YEAR-OLD JAPANESE LAWYER BURNED HIMSELF TO DEATH OUTSIDE THE TOKYO RESIDENCE OF MR. SATO, THE PRIME MINISTER, ON SATURDAY (11 NOVEMBER). THE MAN, MR. TADANOSHIN YUI, WAS PROTESTING AGAINST MR. SATO'S SUPPORT FOR AMERICAN POLICY IN VIETNAM, AND FOR THE RETURN TO JAPAN OF THE ISLAND OF OKINAWA, NOW A U.S. MILITARY BASE.

POLICE FOUND MR. YUI, STILL ALIVE, ON THE PAVEMENT IN FRONT OF THE PRIME MINISTER'S HOME. HIS CHEST AND FACE WERE BADLY BURNED ... HE HAD APPARENTLY POURED AN INFLAMMABLE LIQUID OVER HIMSELF AND SET IT ALIGHT.

HE WAS RUSHES TO HOSPITAL IN A POLICE CAR, BUT DIED ON SUNDAY AFTER BRIEFLY REGAINING CONCIOUSNESS. A NOTE FOUND IN HIS CHARRED CLOTHING WAS ADDRESSED TO MR. SATO. IT EXPLAINED THAT THE SUICIDE WAS A PROTEST AGAINST THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT'S SUPPORT OF UNITED STATES BOMBING IN NORTH VIETNAM, AND THE PPOSITION IT HAS TAKEN ON THE OKINAWA ISSUE.

THE SUICIDE CAME ON THE EVE OF MR. SATO'S DEPARTURE FOR THE UNITED STATES, WHERE HE IS HAVING TALKS ON THE FUTURE OF OKINAWA.
