Twelve South American refugees-who are holding five United Nations officials hostage in a U.N. building?

  • Description

Twelve South American refugees-who are holding five United Nations officials hostage in a U.N. building in Buenos Aires, Argentina, - are hopeful that they will be able to barter themselves a "new life in Europe".

They have been negotiating for a plane to fly them to Switzerland and international sanctuary.

The refugees, apparently led by a Brazilian, seized the offices of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at gunpoint, on Wednesday (8 October).

They originally held 14 hostages, but later released nine of them, including eight women.

A spokesman for the refugees said their aim was to draw attention to the living conditions in Argentina and to win the right for people to leave the country and live in Europe.

Negotiations have been handled by Argentine police and military chiefs, cabinet ministers and the Director of the U.N.'s Legal Division, Jogn Kelly.

Argentine Foreign Minister, Manuel Arauz Castex, told reporters on Thursday that the refugees' departure was imminent, but did not elaborate.
